Hillsides blanketed with vineyards and silver-green olive groves and capped by enchanting towns are the essence of Tuscany, one of the most beautiful places in the world. Much seems unchanged since the Renaissance; Siena's square continues to be captivating, while Chianti's narrow roads wind their way through cypress-strewn countryside. A visit here is magic and food for the soul.
Midway down the Italian peninsula, Tuscany with its hills, snowcapped mountains, dramatic cypress trees, and mile of coastline on the Tyrrhenian Sea, provides breathtaking views everywhere you look. the Arno, its most famous river, stretchs clear across the region from Florence before making its way to the sea just beyond Pisa. The beauty of its landcape proves a perfect foil for the abundance of superlative art and architecture typical of the region. It also produces some of Italy's finest wines and olive oils. The combination of unforgettable art, sumptuous views, and eminently drinkable wines that pair beautifully with its simple food makes a trip to Tuscany something beyond special.
Although Tuscany is relatively small- no important destination is more than a few hours' drive from Florence-the desire to linger is strong: can you really get enough of sitting on a terrazza (terrace) with a good caffè or a full-bodied Chianti, watching the evening settle over a landscape of soft-edged hills, proud medieval towns, quiet villages, and cypress-ringed villas?
It's best to have a car when traveling in Tuscany to enjoy fully the region's riches-it's the only way to get to many small towns and vineyards. The cities west of Florence are easily reached by the A11, which heads from Florence toward Arezzo. Florence and Siena are connected by a superstrada and also by the panoramic SS22, which threads through Chianti wine country. The hill towns north and west of Siena lie along superstradas and winding local roads. All are well marked, but you should arm yourself with a good map.

Ex pieve di San Giovanni Battista - Pisa in Tuscany
It was transformed into a farmhouse. Some splay windows on square stones and parts of a small door on the left side are all that remains of the old structure. The entrance was facing west, like most of the religious buildings of that time. Situated on the diocesan border between Massa and Populonia, it was often subject to territorial disputes.
The parish church was considered by the pilgrims as the diocesan boundary of the road that, from the Pisan hills, led to the district of Cornia through the “piviere” of Querceto (property of the parish church).
